Showcase your project: ultimate cat litter box

Alessandro PaganelliFebruary 25th, 2013

This project by Greg is about building a smart litter box for his cats:

We have three cats and the litter is difficult to control. So I had been thinking through a project to build an enclosure. Once I stumbled on Arduino the doors of opportunity were opened. I ordered the electronics and got started on my project right away. So far the Arduino is activating exhaust fans, lightng, and a Lysol spray dispenser. It tracks the number of times the fans are activated and uses a piezo buzzer to alert a filter cleaning. I plan to use it to trigger cleaning based on usage and track each cats potties so we can control their stink before its too late.

A nice video about this project can be found on YouTube.

Was looking at doing something similar, with one exception. I have a littermaid and was probably going to rip the guts out of it and wire it into the system. That way it would be contained and be able to clean itself.

@sencan – no need for a hitech solution to that age-old problem. Simply put a scratching post nearby with catnip and every time your cat goes near the sofa simply place the cat on near the post – they learn very quickly.

Do you realize that lysol spray poisons your cats, even after the spray appears to dry? Anything within a five foot radius of where the spray has been dispensed needs to be thoroughly cleaned with detergent and lots of hot water to prevent carbol poisoning.

Of course, the risk in building one of these is that your cat doesn’t like it. Then you’ve wasted all the time and effort. Good luck!
